View our employees' stories on how we provide care to the world at JOB SUMMARY Under the guidance of the AirMed Director of Safety and Security, our Operations Safety Officer works with company operational departments, base level managers, and employees to promote a positive safety culture and enhance operational and workplace safety. As needed, this position conducts new-hire as well as recurrent safety training. Functions within a Safety Management System Internal Evaluation Program (IEP) from a safety assurance perspective. The Operations Safey Officer is a key team member focused on communication and relationships to foster all aspects of safety support. This position also conducts event investigations and provides recommendations to company leadership for improvement. The Operations Safety Officer helps to foster a culture of continuous improvement, recognizing opportunities for improvement, and implementing new or improved safety processes and structures, and ensuring effectiveness of system changes. The Operations Safety Officer will have the opportunity to manage key SMS programs on a systemic scale. Resides in Birmingham, AL and reports out of the AirMed Birmingham corporate office. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:

  • Support the company's and corporations Safety Management System (SMS) in all aspects.
  • Conducts or supports investigation of accidents, incidents, and injuries.
  • Evaluates processes and activities utilizing quality management processes to promote quality improvement.
  • Identifies hazards, performs and assists with safety risk and change management assessments.
  • Conduct root cause analysis investigations and provides necessary recommendations on reports received from the various company reporting systems as assigned.
  • Coordinates and works closely with clinical, operations, maintenance, and staff directors on a routine basis.
  • Provide guidance to Base Safety Officers (BSO) on safety related issues.
  • Educate company personnel, and partners by communicating all aspects of corporate safety philosophy and initiatives.
  • Measures company policies and regulatory compliance by conducting base audits, inspections, and evaluations.
  • Assign and monitor Corrective Action & Preventive Action (CAPA) plans for unsatisfactory findings during audits, and safety reports.
  • Assist in the facilitation of systems risk management (SRM) processes, to include system hazard analysis (SHA) as necessary.
  • Participate in base and corporate level safety meetings and conference calls as required.
  • Support operational leaders as a safety advisor.
  • Analyze safety and quality-related data to identify trends, patterns, and areas that need improvement. Prepare reports and presentations to communicate findings to management.
  • Interfaces with certificate voluntary safety programs (ASAP/MSAP, FOQA).
  • Works with the AirMed Director of Safety and Security, AMI Operational Excellence Program Manager, AMI Senior Management, AMI President, and staff to establish clear safety objectives and goals.
  • In conjunction with the AMI Director of Safety and Security define methods, processes, and structure needed to monitor and report on safety performance and meeting AirMed safety goals and objectives.
  • Assist AirMed managers develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks associated with operations. This may involve recommending changes to processes, equipment, protocols, support structures, etc.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and open dialogue at all levels of the organization to enable a sustainable culture of safe operations.
    • Collaborates to ensure compliance with 14 CFR Part 5 Safety Management System (SMS) mandates across all service lines to ensure uniformity, effectiveness, and ongoing relevance to the changing aviation environment.
    • Maintains current knowledge of applicable regulations impacting air-ambulance safety and quality assurance.
    • Works with the AirMed directors, leaders and staff to develop, revise, and maintain various safety manuals.
    • Develop routine safety communications (safety alerts, newsletters, lessons learned, etc.) for AirMed wide distribution.
    • Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS
    • Education:
      • Associates degree; (bachelor's degree preferred) or equivalent practical experience.
      • Associates degree or safety certification (aviation safety preferred).
      • Aviation Accident Investigation certification (preferred) or equivalent practical experience.
      • Quality Management or Quality Auditing certification or equivalent practical experience preferred.
      • Experience:
        • 5 years' experience as a pilot; medical flight crewmember (flight paramedic or flight nurse); or A&P mechanic or equivalent.
        • Prior experience in aviation safety, or specific and relevant aviation safety management experience and formal education.
        • Organizational auditing experience (preferred).
        • Experience in change management and quality assurance initiatives.
        • Strong math and writing skills, ability to analyze data and draw conclusions, strong analytical skills with proficiency in data analysis tools and software, public speaking.
        • Working knowledge and experience with:
        • Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
        • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations
        • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) & HAZMAT regulations
        • Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
        • National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regulations.
        • Quality Management
        • Ability to analyze problems and develop solutions within the policies and procedures of the organization as well as state and federal regulations.
        • Intermediate to advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, PowerBi, and Access.
        • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
          • Frequently required: standing, walking, stooping, grasping and repetitive motions; sit, reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
          • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.
          • Occasionally lift and move heavy objects.
          • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
          • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals.
          • Work around machinery with moving parts.
          • Specialized PPE may be required.
          • Travel is required (via air travel or extended drive times in motor vehicle).
          • Must be able to read, comprehend, write, perform calculations, reason, and analyze.
          • Occasionally required to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
